Clik here to view. One of the fastest rising costs for Americans today is healthcare, and many families must budget carefully to afford regular health care checkups. A recent look at the cost of health care for San Antonio residents shows that many procedures are affordably priced when compared to other major markets around the United States.
A recent cost-comparison study of eight common health care procedures revealed that San Antonio offered the least expensive options for five out of the eight procedures when compared to other markets in Texas including Houston, Dallas, and Austin. For example, patients in need of a CT scan would pay an average of $1,200 in Austin but would pay just $865 in San Antonio.
San Antonio also ranked well nationally for average cost when compared against the 30 largest markets around the country. San Antonio ranked 24th for average CT scan cost. The most expensive place to get a CT scan was Milwaukee, Wisconsin where residents paid an average of almost $1,600.
Some of the other procedures where residents of San Antonio enjoyed lower average costs than residents in other major Texas cities included:
- Adult preventive primary care visit
- HPV screening
- Lipid panel
- Mammogram
- MRI of the lower back
- Preventative gynecological exam
Why is San Antonio Healthcare So Affordable?
Many cities are known for a particular industry, and that industry tends to flourish because of the high rate of research and the density of professionals working in that area. One of the major industries in San Antonio is health care, and when combined with biosciences research it’s the city’s largest industry.
In fact, the impact of health care and biosciences for San Antonio’s economy comes to around $31 billion a year. A large number of health care facilities and medical professionals in San Antonio means that competition is fierce, and residents have their pick of several well-regarded family practice clinics and other healthcare facilities.
Another area where San Antonio residents enjoy affordable rates is on OB/GYN follow-up visits. At just $70, San Antonio charged its residents one of the lowest amounts on average when compared to the 30 major markets. Residents in nearby Austin, however, paid much more with an average of $118 for a similar visit.

Receiving Checkups and Regular Healthcare is Essential
There are millions of people who don’t visit the doctor on a regular basis even though regular check-ups and preventative care are important. Some people are uninsured and assume they can’t afford care and other people have insurance but have an aversion to visiting the doctor.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it’s important to meet with a doctor at your family practice clinic to discuss your health and the necessary health screenings that will keep you healthy.
“Regular health exams and tests can help find problems before they start. They also can help find problems early, when your chances for treatment and cure are better.”
There are many essential health screenings and exams that you should receive as you age. The doctor at your family practice clinic can help you figure out the best schedule for preventative care, screenings, and vaccinations. Some of the health services recommended by the CDC include:
- Breast and cervical cancer screenings
- Cholesterol
- High blood pressure checks
- HIV/AIDS tests
- Oral health screenings
- Skin cancer checks
